Ships are globally identified and tracked by means of the Long-Range Ship Identification and Tracking System. It is a system of reporting generally from ships to flag states.

With the decision made by the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), being included in the Long-Range Ship Identification and Tracking System (LRIT) has been made obligatory for each country that is a party of the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS).
