A new capacity agreement has been signed between Türkiye’s satellite operator Türksat A.Ş. and Avanti Communications to strengthen South Africa’s satellite communication infrastructure. With this agreement, Türkiye further reinforces its position among countries exporting satellite communication services to Africa. Broadband data and internet services will be delivered to many regions across the continent via Türksat 5B.
The cooperation agreement between Türksat A.Ş. and Avanti Communications was signed at the AfricaCom 2025 exhibition held in Cape Town by Dr. Selman Demirel, Deputy General Manager of Satellite Services at Türksat, and Debbie Mavis, Chief Operating Officer of Avanti Communications. The agreement expands the scope of cooperation initiated between the two companies in 2019 and allocates additional capacity from Türksat’s most powerful communications satellite, Türksat 5B, to the African continent. With this added capacity, broadband internet and corporate connectivity needs—especially in regions experiencing limited service access—will be met via Türksat. Through this agreement, Türkiye strengthens its role as an exporter of satellite communication services to Africa. High-speed satellite services via Türksat 5B will support corporate connectivity services, transportation solutions, internet service providers, and public infrastructure projects.
-“South Africa Holds Strategic Importance for Türksat”
Dr. Selman Demirel, Deputy General Manager of Satellite Services at Türksat, emphasized the importance of the agreement, stating: ““South Africa is a market of strategic importance for Türksat. With the additional capacity provided through Türksat 5B, we are effectively responding to the growing demand for satellite services in the region. Avanti’s regional expertise will ensure the successful expansion of this partnership.”
Debbie Mavis, Chief Operating Officer of Avanti Communications, highlighted the significance of the cooperation for the region: “Our ongoing partnership with Türksat contributes to meeting the high demand for GEO satellite services across South Africa. This collaboration represents an important step in delivering reliable connectivity to both individuals and institutions in the region.”
International Cooperation Between Türksat and Intersputnik
At AfricaCom 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between Türksat A.Ş. and Intersputnik to strengthen global satellite collaborations. The signing ceremony was held between Dr. Selman Demirel, Deputy General Manager of Satellite Services at Türksat, and Ksenia Drozdova, Director General of Intersputnik. Through this agreement, the two institutions aim to develop new satellite communication solutions in international markets, enhance global partnerships, and offer customers a broader range of services.
Intense Engagement at AfricaCom 2025
As AfricaCom 2025 concluded, the Türksat delegation held meetings throughout the exhibition with telecommunications authorities, broadcasters, operators, and satellite service providers from various African countries. During these engagements, technical evaluations were conducted regarding the region’s increasing satellite communication needs, and discussions were held on potential new areas of cooperation.
